By the autumn of , however, the NWA was a deteriorating shell of its former self. For decades, since its founding in , the NWA had been the preeminent sanctioning body in all of professional wrestling.
By the autumn of , however, the NWA was down to less than five members. The victory, though, was a hollow one. Despite winning the case and earning the freedom, for the first time in years, to book their Worlds Champion when, where, and how they chose, there was no functioning territory system with which to promote the title.
The NWA, as fans had known it, was gone. Of the scant few active promotions remaining, none had a television deal. Enter Eastern Championship Wrestling. The shift to the NWA did not come without a price.
Their arrival, and edgy work, would come to define the early phases of the hardcore promotion and build the foundation for the growth yet to come. All in all, the autumn of , through all the turmoil and ups and downs, marked the beginning of the rise of ECW. Night two was headlined by Sabu challenging Shane Douglas for the ECW Heavyweight title; Kevin Sullivan battling Abdullah the Butcher in a steel cage; and the Public Enemy battling the Headhunters in a tag team cage match, though the Headhunters would ultimately no-show the event.
It should be noted that this edition of Hardcore TV is a VHS transfer, though that fact does little to hinder the enjoyment of the program. Context, meanwhile, is excellent.
