Sometimes it feels like the narrative is set for a player, that the conclusion is written and there is little they can do to alter when, or how, the chapter ends. But sometimes all it takes to change the script is one thing, be that a string of games, a pep talk from the manager or a sublime free kick to bail your team out in Paisley with half an hour left. Step forward Borna Barisic. Whether this will be the turning point in his Rangers career remains to be seen but, for the past twelve months, Barisic has been something of an enigma in a Rangers shirt.
Despite a positive start against St Mirren and Motherwell last August, recurring injuries and some lacklustre displays saw the left-back berth regularly rotated between he, Jon Flanagan and Andy Halliday.
Barisic impressed in training this summer, showing an improved intensity to his attitude. He was given a second chance to claim the position but flat performances followed and Flanagan replaced him upon his return from injury.
There have been reports linking Barisic with a move away from Ibrox this summer but sources tell The Athletic that he is happy at Rangers and determined to fight for his place. If it was the minutes against Rangers that won him his move, then Rangers fans may also remember the man who signed him for Osijek and developed him for three years.
It may also go some way to explaining the leaked tactics board in the away dressing room. He is technically good, understands football, his timing is very good too and he has great crossing ability.
