Ohio and more than 40 other states have reached an agreement with the Web site Craigslist to crack down on illegal activity such as prostitution and inappropriate content posted on the site, Ohio Attorney General Nancy H. Rogers announced today. The agreement will allow legitimate escort services to continue advertising, according to Jim Buckmaster, Craigslist's CEO. Under the deal, Craigslist must require those placing ads on the site's erotic services section to provide a telephone number and pay a fee with a valid credit card.
Craigslist will then forward the resulting information in response to law enforcement subpoenas, according to the agreement. Also, all proceeds from erotic services ads will be donated to charity. In addition, Craigslist is set to take legal action against 14 software and Internet companies that, for a fee, helped those posting erotic services ads to circumvent the Web site's defenses against illegal activity and inappropriate content. Craigslist will also provide the attorneys general with information about those businesses for possible criminal and civil prosecution.
