Our numerous meetings and conversations have enriched my wife, Tzfira, and me. The graduate Old Testament seminars, those Wednesday afternoon meetings, have been a source of inspiration to both Tzfira and me. In the course of the seminars, we have dealt with significant issues that gave birth to a number of the essays that are presented in this volume. Funlola Olojede took it upon herself to prepare the index, check the coherency of the manuscript, and edit skilfully some of the additions.
The present volume contains a collection of fourteen essays applying the latest and neglected methods and offering new and innovative insights into the interpretation of the New Testament book To the Hebrews. The excitingly diverse contributions, which stem from an intriguing international group of senior and younger Hebrews, New Testament, and Old Testament scholars, are presented in three parts: Part One focuses on cultic language, concepts, and practice in Hebrews; Part Two on sociology, ethics, and rhetoric in Hebrews; and Part Three on textual-historical, comparative, and intertextual approaches to Hebrews.

On the occasion of her partial retirement from the Protestant Theological University in Amsterdam, colleagues and friends honored Professor Alberdina Houtman with a Festschrift on the reception of Hebrew texts in the context of Jewish, Christian and Muslim religio-literary traditions. The eight essays in the first part share an interest in the afterlife of Hebrew texts or scriptural motifs in different Jewish surroundings across time and place, either in Hebrew or Aramaic, or in German or Dutch linguistic contexts.
