A Russian spy bandaged his head with tissue paper in a bid to persuade his sceptical girlfriend that he had a brain tumour, a court has heard. Bulgarian national Bizer Dzhambazov, 43, made the audacious move after partner Vanya Gaberova began to suspect that he was lying about his condition and had not split up with his previous partner.
Gaberova who is also accused of being a member of the Russian spy ring, ran her own beauty salon in Acton, West London.
She broke up with her previous boyfriend Tihomir Ivanchev, 39, a painter and decorator living in Enfield, North London, who is also accused of spying, and began dating Dzhambazov. Gaberova told the Old Bailey that Dzhambazov had told her he was a 'policeman for Interpol ' and had showed her a fake badge, when they started their relationship in August The year-old said she travelled with him to Austria, Spain and Montenegro, because she believed he was tracking down 'bad' people and combining work and a holiday.
Dzhambazov who has admitted running the ground operations of a spy ring on behalf of the Russians, but he was still living with Katrin Ivanova, 33, another alleged member of the spy ring at the time.
Gaberova, Ivanova and Ivanchev all deny knowing that they were conducting surveillance on behalf of Russian intelligence agencies.
