The kelp forests of Santa Monica Bay once teemed with seven species of abaloneβred, pink, green, white, black, pinto, and flat.
Through overharvesting in the past century, loss of kelp habitat, and disease, all seven species found in southern California have been nearly wiped out. As the primary sea urchin competitor, these large underwater snails play an important role in maintaining healthy kelp ecosystems and have been sought after by Californians for their cultural and economic importance throughout history.
In , TBF celebrated 6 years of white abalone outplanting and to date, successfully outplanting 8, white abalone. They also protect neighboring coastlines from erosion and pull in carbon dioxide from the ocean as they grow. In , TBF celebrated 11 years of kelp forest restoration, with By composting locally, we reduce the need to transport waste to distant processing facilities, reducing smog-forming air pollutants, and carbon dioxide emissions.
At the same time, applying compost improves soil health, increases water retention, and enhances carbon sequestration in the soil. As the native plants of this coastal habitat grow, they capture windblown sand beneath their branches and leaves.
Over time, they build dunes that prevent waves and extreme tides from flooding the beach and nearby infrastructure. By restoring this habitat, TBF and its partners are able to create beaches that are naturally resistant to sea level rise, while providing refuge for endangered species and enhancing the natural beauty of the shores.
