Applying deep pressure to soft tissue structure, such as muscle, long term discomfort and tension can be released. This is known as deep tissue massage and has been shown to be beneficial for various conditions. The clinician will focus on specific areas of tension, pain or discomfort and aim to break down tight bands of tissue, known as adhesions.
By working on the differing layers of tissue known as fascia, with deep slow movements, pain can be reduced and movement improved. Deep tissue massage, with its remedial effects, can help with issues such as upper back tension, stiff neck, lower back pain, shoulder discomfort, thigh and leg tightness as well as acute and chronic aches and pains.

As well as relaxing and lengthening the superficial muscles, deep tissue massage can also aid in lymph and blood circulation, and well as digestive motility, known as peristalsis.
Micro-tears occur within the fascia as a result of the massage. These tears fill with elastin and collagen which allows for increased flexibility. After a session of deep tissue massage, stretching is recommended to avoid reoccurrence of the adhesions. Sports massage has many benefits, which are especially apparent if you train or exercises regularly as increased tension is created within the muscles.
