The Little House on the Prairie series of children's books, published between and , were based on her childhood in a settler and pioneer family. At the time of her birth, the family lived seven miles north of the village of Pepin, Wisconsin , in the Big Woods region of Wisconsin. Wilder's birth site is commemorated by a replica log cabin at the Little House Wayside in Pepin.
