June 3, In Memory of Dr. Isabel S. On the eve of a profoundly consequential election many commentators have noted the role that ideals of masculinity have played during the campaign.
Indeed, this year is not the first time masculinity has taken center stage during a presidential election. During the early cold war United States political culture was enmeshed in a series of polarities that centered on the perceived dangers of the Soviet Union. These dichotomies, which painted a world in black and white, were intertwined with gender and sexuality.
For example, anticommunists vilified gay Americans, particularly gay men, for being potentially vulnerable to Soviet brainwashing and undermining the virile masculinity that undergirded cold war culture. Meanwhile, many viewed single and working women, who were not contained in nuclear families living in suburban single-family homes, as posing a threat to democratic ideals and undermining the power of consumerism.
Similarly, many viewed social protesters, particularly those advocating civil rights, as undermining American values and posing a destabilizing threat during the cold war. After World War II politicians keenly felt the need to embody the ideals of cold war warriors.
